Meet CLEANHYPRO Partner VSParticle: Driving Down Costs with Ultra-Low Iridium

VSParticle contributes essential cutting-edge technology to the CLEANHYPRO project by focusing on one of the biggest hurdles in green hydrogen production: the cost and reliance on critical raw materials. VSParticle produces ultra-low Iridium loadings on Porous Transport Layers (PTLs) for the best performing PEM electrolysers. By minimizing the amount of iridium—one of the rarest elements on Earth—needed for catalysts, VSParticle is making electrolysis significantly more sustainable.

A Highlight of VSParticle:

By reducing the amount of iridium in electrolysers, we will significantly lower the costs to produce hydrogen and speed up market adaptation. This commitment helps push green hydrogen into the mainstream.

Role in CLEANHYPRO:

VSParticle’s main contribution is scaling up the production process for these critical components. Their work involves ensuring that high-performance materials with reduced Iridium content can be reliably produced in the project’s facilities. VSParticle is actively involved in the initial material screening for electrocatalytic performance as part of the WP3 pilot line validation, ensuring that the high performance of the electrolysers is maintained even with ultra-low Iridium usage.

Key Team Members CLEANHYPRO benefits from the technical expertise of VSParticle’s team:

  • Pauline Roels (Project Manager)

  • Erdem Irtem (Application Specialist – Electrolysis)

  • Erik Buis (Prototype Engineer)

  • Christophe Geuens (System Engineer)

  • Joel Landivar (Electrical Engineer)

  • Deep Patel (Aerosol Specialist)

In their own words:

“Cleanhypro allows us to collaborate with leading partners across Europe, share knowledge, and accelerate the development of sustainable hydrogen production. VSParticle is focused on scaling up production while improving iridium efficiency and maintaining the highest performance of electrolyzers.”
