We are delighted to introduce Stargate Hydrogen, a standout winner of the CLEANHYPRO First Wave Open Calls. As a forward-thinking European electrolyser technology company, Stargate Hydrogen is dedicated to developing precious-metal-free industrial green hydrogen systems to power energy-intensive industries.
About the Organisation: Stargate Hydrogen builds next-generation alkaline electrolysers for major infrastructure and energy resilience projects. Their systems are specifically deployed in sectors looking to transition away from grey hydrogen, such as refining, ammonia, methanol, e-methane, and steel. Backed by committed investors like Repsol and trusted by major clients across Europe, Turkey, and India, Stargate Hydrogen focuses on bridging the gap between proven technology today and the high-performance breakthroughs of tomorrow.
Q&A with Rainer Küngas:
What are your expectations from the Open Calls? “We expect CLEANHYPRO to provide Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) expertise to assess our ENDURE project at the stack and system level. This will help us quantify the contribution of our main innovations, such as porous transport electrodes, catalysts without platinum group metals, improved stack components, and lower degradation. The results will provide vital data on environmental impact, cost drivers, and scale-up potential to benchmark ENDURE against state-of-the-art electrolysers.”
What makes the ENDURE stack so innovative? “The main innovation is the use of 3D-structured, laterally graded, flow-engineered porous transport electrodes designed by UCLouvain. These enhance bubble removal, improve mass transport, and enable highly efficient operation at high current densities. ENDURE also develops scalable, precious-metal-free, nickel-mo-based catalysts and improved stack components. Our target is a prototype stack of at least five cells with a degradation rate of just 0.1% per 1000 hours.”
What are the next steps for your project? “Our upcoming study will compare a baseline alkaline electrolysis stack developed by Stargate Hydrogen with the innovative stack developed in the ENDURE project. We will assess material use, electricity consumption, degradation, stack lifetime, CAPEX, OPEX, and life-cycle emissions. Crucially, the findings will be scaled up to a 100 Nm³ H₂/h system operated with renewable electricity to ensure relevance at an industrial scale.”
What is your long-term vision for this work? “ENDURE aims to bring the performance of alkaline electrolysis closer to proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis while retaining the key advantages of alkaline tech: lower costs, scalable materials, and reduced dependence on critical raw materials. By translating technical gains into solid evidence, we hope to accelerate industrial deployment and wider adoption of green hydrogen across the EU.”
