Matteco is Accelerating Green Hydrogen with Next-Generation Materials

We are proud to introduce Matteco, one of the pioneering winners of the CLEANHYPRO First Wave Open Calls. Headquartered in Spain, Matteco is a cleantech standout focused on improving the performance, durability, and cost-efficiency of water electrolysis, with a specific focus on Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) systems.

About the Organisation: Matteco creates proprietary, industrial-grade material platforms designed to bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and real-world deployment. Built on deep expertise in materials science and electrochemistry, the company positions itself as a key technology partner for electrolyser manufacturers and energy infrastructure players worldwide, driving the global hydrogen transition.

Q&A with Elisa Martínez de Castro:

  • What are your expectations from the Open Calls? “In general, Matteco expects to gain vital access to pilot lines and infrastructure, including electrode manufacturing, characterisation labs, stack testing, and simulations. Additionally, we are looking forward to getting technical support from consortium members alongside business and commercialisation guidance.”

  • What are the next steps for your project? “Our next steps will focus on investigating the use of different polymers as binders in the final inks. We will evaluate their effect on rheological properties, deposition process stability, and the performance of the final electrode.”

  • What is your long-term vision for this work? “Following our initial ink optimization, Fraunhofer will perform electrochemical measurements using the deposited electrodes to identify the most promising candidates. Final evaluations will then be carried out at the stack level. Our overall objective is to determine the optimal combination of electrode and catalyst layer in terms of physical, rheological, and electrochemical performance.”
