Meet CLEANHYPRO partner Elcogen.

Elcogen develops and supplies solid oxide fuel cell technologies, enabling the production of affordable green hydrogen and low-emission electricity across diverse sectors, from residential to large-scale industrial applications. Founded in 2001, the company is today headquartered in Tallinn, Estonia. It has R&D centres of excellence both sides of the Baltic Gulf in Estonia and Finland, with brand-new state-of-the-art facilities currently under construction in Tallinn. This will increase production capacity from 10 MW to 360 MW, establishing a blueprint for further scaling to meet growing global demand.

Elcogen’s flexible SO technology is application-agnostic and reversible; capable of operating efficiently in both fuel cell (SOFC) and electrolysis (SOEC) mode. They offer three main product lines, elcoCells, elcoStacks and elcoModules. These are incorporated into third-party systems for applications including emission-free heat and power generation, green hydrogen production, renewable energy storage, and the production of synthetic fuels and chemicals. Their components operate at significantly lower temperatures than traditional technologies, producing an impressive 33 kWh/kg of hydrogen and achieving 75+% electrical efficiency in fuel cell mode.

In addition to the supply of components, they offer comprehensive engineering services to support technology integration, ensuring seamless adoption and optimal functionality of their solutions inside systems; systems designed to unlock the full potential of renewable energy.

Role in CLEANHYPRO

As part of this project, Elcogen is building stacks from novel unit cells, conducting tests, and analyzing the results to demonstrate the functionality and feasibility of improved SOEC technology. Elcogen AS (its Estonia-based entity) is specifically cooperating with companies on cell modification and improvement, including new materials and microstructures. Elcogen Oy (its Finland-based entity) is focused on stack development and industrialisation.

Key Team Members

CLEANHYPRO benefits from the expertise of different members from Elcogen:

In their own words

At Elcogen, we believe that the key to enabling the uptake of green hydrogen is reducing the current high cost of electrolyser manufacturing. This can be achieved by optimizing component design for mass manufacturing and finding ways to reduce reliance on critical raw materials in stacks and cells to mitigate any price and availability fluctuations“, said Andrei Denissenko, R&D Project Manager for Elcogen AS (Estonian entity).

It’s fantastic that CLEANHYPRO has formed a collaborative platform for testing electrolysis materials and components, improving cell performance, lowering costs, and making clean hydrogen production more efficient. We’re proud to be a part of this Horizon Europe project“, said Minna Toivola, Project Coordinator for Elcogen Oy (Finnish entity).
